In this lesson we are going to review by going over two of the tunes you already know, Cripple Creek, and Fireball Mail, both based on the playing of bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs. Both Scruggs recordings are from the classic Foggy Mountain Banjo album, recorded on Columbia- which apparently is back in print, and available from Amazon.
The next three Cripple Creek MP3 examples are all fiddle recordings. The lead fiddler is probably Clayton McMichen, and the singer is Riley Puckett, who had already achieved prominence as the first country music singing star. This is a Smithsonian field recording made around , and was released on the Folkways album Traditional Music from Grayson and Carroll Counties, Virginia. The third example is a recording of the late Senator Robert Byrd, who was not only one of the most powerful politicians in America, but was also an excellent old-time fiddler.
It was released on a County Records album entitled entitled U.

For those violinists reading this, you may not know that Mandolin is a near relative of the violin. If the violin was the mother and the guitar was the father, then the Mandolin would be their son or daughter!!! How is it possible you ask? Take a violin neck, tuning and strings, add frets and put it on a miniature guitar body and voila! Other than playing classical music I have been known to belt out a few fiddle tunes in my day. I first became interested in the mandolin while I was fiddling Irish and Australian jigs and reels in my student days.
The guitarist in the folk band had a mandolin he used for the folk melodies. He and I were both surprised that the first time I picked up a mandolin, I could play any music he put in front of me! What a pleasant surprise! Even better, he gave me his mandolin on my next birthday -thanks Dave! If you can play both violin and guitar then guess what? You can play the mandolin!

The legacy of their craft and the contributions they made exceed the merits perceived in their time, and they established the criteria by which all string musical instruments are measured today. But one might suggest that Loar was just a cut above the rest. His approach to the science of music to which his patents attest and the acoustical properties of the instruments he created, bear no equal.
He was one of the earliest pioneers to amplify instruments electrically, and in his search for excellence, he created a keyboard instrument that would never go out of tune. Possibly even more important is that this was an electric keyboard whose design was decades ahead of its time. What further separated Loar from the rest is that he was a musician — not a luthier — with an overwhelming interest in instrument construction, a rich understanding of musical acoustics, and the knowledge to design instruments that produce elegant tone.

Many a guitar student started on one of their student instruments. How many beginning players had a sunburst Stella by Harmony to learn on? Most of my basic knowledge about them comes from what I’ve read in American Guitars by Tom Wheeler and from the ones I’ve seen or owned over the years. From the acoustics I used to sell to the yard sale electrics I used to find, I’ve seen quite a few different guitars. My experience with these guitars goes back to the early 60’s.
My first guitar was a Harmony acoustic and learning to play guitar was inspired by one of these student instruments. The guitars in my store at that time were mostly Harmony made, and I would spend hours looking through Jobber catalogues at these guitars.

As a sessionist he belonged to a group of LA based guitarists that did the majority of session work around town for both the movie studios and the labels. Long before select groups nicknamed “The Wrecking Crew,” or Motown’s “Funk Brothers” and Nashville’s “A-team,” they were essentially the first wave of professionals that got the calls. They consisted of players like George M. Hollywood, CA – Feb. He said that George M. Smith, one of the guitar greats of the ’30s and ’40s that he described as brilliant, was responsible for the studio guitar player really being recognized as a musician.
Prior to that, guitarists were only thought of as rhythm players who played ukulele-type chords. Howard Roberts used to play with Bobby Troup 6 nights a week at a club called the Encore. Bob Bain said that because of that schedule he and all the other guys would occasionally fill in for Howard with Bobby. If they used one, it would be almost as a solo instrument for a certain scene an likely the only time they did it was for a sequence that would require a banjo, or for a Western sequence.
Electric guitar was out completely. That was a bad reputation to have! There were three teachers, and they knew nine chords — three each!
There was, and is, a west London music mafia most of the major labels have their offices over here, convenient for the large riverside homes of many of their senior executives and it started here. Actually it feels like a lot of the old blues foot soldiers are in the audience. And fronting the band on harmonica, and with some very tasteful blues licks on his Gibson guitar note to artist — please clean guitar , is Alan Glen.
